Back to "The Bottomelss Pit"

We own some property near the Golden Spike monument with some mountains.  Years ago we had heard there was a cave on one of those mountains that dropped straight down and was so deep you could throw a rock in and you’d never hear it hit the bottom.  Well, my dad is a bit of an adventurer, and so several years ago he set out to find this legendary “bottomless cave”.  After some looking he found it, from the helicopter, and told me we were going up to hike up to it and take a look.  Our fist trip hiking up the mountain with my dad, brother Trent, our dog, Spam, and me proved fruitless…  We later found out that he had made a mistake, and we’d hiked up the wrong mountain…  Seeing something from the air and identifying it from the ground can be difficult…J

A few weeks later, we tried again and got it right.  We hiked up to the top and sure enough found an enormous hole in the side of the mountain that dropped down into what looked like a big cave!  We threw a rock in, and listened… eventually we did hear it hit bottom, but it was only after a few seconds…  which told us this was BIG.

So, my Dad, being “my dad” again, was determined to get inside this thing, so we took several weeks getting prepared.  Now we have almost no experience with rock climbing or repelling, mind you, so we took a couple of repelling lessons at the local rock gym, practiced once or twice, and then, without any type of a guide, repelled straight down into this enormous cave without any way to communicate with the outside world if we had problems getting out.  Ha ha!  I love it!  Going someplace and experiencing something that no living person has ever been or experienced before is such a blast.  I love the challenge!  And I love that nothing stands in my Dads way when he gets something on his mind

That was several years ago, and we’ve never been inside since.  We’ve talked about it often, but never arranged the time to make a trip like that again.

It is a massive undertaking to get inside this thing!  And you have to be in great shape, because the only way to get out is out is to climb up about 200 feet of rope.  My Dad, has decided that he wants to drill a hole in to the side of the mountain that so other family members can get inside and experience this amazing place. So we took a trip up to the cave last week (which is when these pics were taken) to try to see which direction the cave came down the mountain…  To do so, we attached a camera to a pole and dropped it down into the hole in the side of the mountain..  It brought back great memories, and it was great to be up there with me and my Dad…

Now I’m wanting to drop back inside… Anyone up for an adventure?
