California Trip - Kites on the beach (Day 2)

The next day was suppose to be a little cooler so we decided to go less in the water, and fly some kites on the beach. There was a good wind gong – strong enough to hold the kites up in the air, but no so strong as to tear the cheap-o kites I’d bought at the local Rite-aid. Eventually, though, Connor ended up ripping his kite to the point it couldn’t get repaired – but that just provided opportunity to extend the length of Rocky’s string twice as long. (we have a tradition in my family to see how high up we can get a kite… often times adding 3 or 4 entire string lengths end on end – we only had 2 for this trip. J)

Later, to reasons unknown, the kite got away from one of the kids… It was chased as it flew away off into the distance, but to no avail. Off in the distance you could see the kite being blown over the hotels and buildings, and losing altitude little by little, until all of the sudden it rose again high into the sky – it must have gotten caught on something. So for the next several hours we played and I’d check from time to time to see if the kite was still visible. Sure enough – with enough looking – you could find it as a spec in the sky. When we started to head in at the end of the day, we were able to track down the tree that had caught the kite. Little Connor, climber that he is, scaled the tree to quite a height for a 7 year old, and we were able to actually save the kite to fly again another day. Sunshine, beach, kites, and adventure – it was a fun day for sure!

My boys, the climbers... they'll climb anything!!! Here they actually stopped everything that was happening just to climb the rocks. And they had to do it 2-3 times before they were done. Then they started looking for more things to climb.

Here you can see way up in the distance the kite that blew away.

Here's Connor retrieving the kite from the top of the tree.
