Connor's Chess Club

Connor LOVES to play chess. I taught him almost two years ago, and ever since then he begs me to play with him at least weekly – and sometimes daily. And yes, there’s even times when I’m being asked several times a day! He learned quickly how each of the pieces move, and it’s been fun watching him migrate into his own little spun strategies, and setting traps.

When he heard there was a Chess Club in his school, he asked if he could go. I thought that would be a great idea, and a great opportunity to learn better strategies and develop his thinking skills. But we were both disappointed to learn that the club is only for 5th graders and above. When I picked up Connor from school later that week, we walked by the cafeteria where they were holding the chess club, and because I had a little bit of time, I asked if we could borrow a board to play a game. After the teacher saw how involved and developed Connor was at his age, he invited Connor to come to the chess club meetings. He couldn’t officially be part of the chess club, but he could attend, and that was enough for him.

Since then we’ve been to several of the chess club meetings (where they mostly just play chess, and have a quick 5 min instruction from the teacher on strategy), I don’t know how much he gets out of it, but he its great father/son time to take some time out and just play a game of chess with each other. I was never much of a chess player. I knew how to play, but never got much into it. It looks like this little guy is gonna keep me on my toes in this area. Precious little guy…

Wow, this is impressive. What a smart boy. I love that first pic - he's thinking so hard! I'm not sure I dare to play him; he'd probably beat me. His dad I'd play though. :)
